No time to waste we have 12 great obscure covers to get through. Sit back and enjoy the music.

12. Bitches Ain’t Shit

Original Artist : NWA, made popular by Snoop Dogg

Cover Artist : Ben Folds Five

I forgot to mention that this list is not in a particular order. I only place this at number 12 because this is the most popular of all the songs I have listed, hopefully this will keep you going through the list. Ben Folds puts Snoop to shame in this masterpiece of a cover. They managed to pull this off in a somewhat serious manner which is definitely commendable, considering the content. One of my favorite covers of all time.

11. I Will Survive

Original Artist : Gloria Gaynor

Cover Artist : Cake

Here’s another attention grabber. along with number 12 this is another popular cover song that most people have heard at some point. Regardless this is still a great cover and is worthy of its spot in the top 12.

10. Losing My Religion

Original Artist : REM

Cover Artist : Scary Kids Scaring Kid

Being born in the 80’s, most of the music I grew up to was a little 80’s music and a ton of 90’s Alternative. One of my favorite songs of the time was Losing My Religion by REM. Scary Kids Scaring Kids pulls off a unique yet tasteful version of this great song.

9. Holding out for a hero

Original Artist :Bonnie Tyler

Cover Artist : Emery

I first Heard the original version of this song on the great Kevin Bacon flick Footloose. Since the song has been featured in several movies and TV shows, while managing to be covered by several bands. While I really enjoyed the Frou Frou version of the song I thought that Emery’s cover suited the countdown more. Not to mention the guy who made this video did an excellent job of making me laugh.

8. Like a Prayer

Original Artist : Madonna

Cover Artist : Rufio

YouTube Preview Image

Rufio is in the running for my top 10 favorite bands. I have listened to them for quite sometime now and haven’t been able to find a song I don’t like. Great song, Great band. I apologize for the Final Fantasy X video. It was the only one I could find with decent audio.

7. You Oughta Know

Original Artist : Alanis Morissette

Cover Artist : The Killing Moon

YouTube Preview Image

And to think I thought only Alanis could sound that angry. I know I shouldn’t admit this but, I like Alanis. I feel like an empowered woman burning her bra every time I hear one her songs, even if it is a cover. Ok … I’ve gone to far.

6. Straight Up

Original Artist : Paula Abdul

Cover Artist : Halifax

YouTube Preview Image

Paula may not be so hot on American Idol, but back in the day, tsssssss …… HooOOOoOTTTTTTT. Well, maybe not that hot but at least doable. Halifax does a way better job with song. In addition the video features adolescent dudes making a weak attempt at Jack Ass. Amusing none the less.

5. Happy Together

Original Artist : The Turtles

Cover Artist : Simple Plan

YouTube Preview Image

I know what your thinking. The Turtles … Really? Yes The Turtles, not the ones your thinking. The Ninja Turtles didn’t put out an album as far as I can remember. I don’t really like this song or Simple Plan. I’m not really sure why I put this on the list at all. If I wasn’t so lazy I would delete it right now.

4. Don’t You Forget About Me

Original Artist : Simple Minds

Cover Artist : Rufio

YouTube Preview Image

I told you before, Rufio is one of my favorite bands. Why not have them on the countdown twice. Keep that thinking up and I’ll add em again. The original version of his song is most known for its appearance in the hit movie, The Breakfast Club. That red head was hot, but not in a super hot kinda way. More in a “Hey I think I gotta chance” kinda way.

3. Your Love

Original Artist : The Outfield

Cover Artist : Midtown

YouTube Preview Image

Are you really still reading these? I mean, come on. I can barely keep writing this crap. Well, I guess you win the prize. I was lying before these are in a specific order. Thats right you are the only one that knows that this Top 12 list actually is in order from worst to best.

2. Enjoy the Silence

Original Artist : Depeche Mode

Cover Artist : Anberlin

Who would have thought a DP cover song would have made the countdown. I guess it’s no surprise really since Anberlin is doing the cover.

1. Jumper

Original Artist : Third Eye Blind

Cover Artist : Bed Light For Blue Eyes

Wowzers!!! Bed Light For Blue Eyes takes the first ever Golden TMG Obscure Cover Award. Great jobs, click on all the ads twice to collect your prize. In all honesty, this is one of the most professional sounding covers on this list. I feel this could really be a hit again with these guys.

Thank you for watching. I hope you enjoyed the countdown. For those of you who still pay for music the following cd’s may interest you.

  1. Quite obscure, The Gourds covering Snoop Dogs, Gin and Juice

  3. I think a better cover of Enjoy the Silence was done by Lacuna Coil.

  5. Personally, I think you missed the best one: Alanis Morrisette’s cover of My Humps

  6. I thought about adding that video but I don’t think it is obscure enough. I’ll add it to the honorable mention section though.

  7. You guys should all check out richard cheese.

  8. Time After Time-Quietdrive

  9. these aren’t obscure at all.

Anyone who’s into underground music at all; or even mtv has heard these songs, and if they haven’t, it’s because they aren’t paying attention.

  10. Not sure if it’s really “obscure” or not, but Jonathan Coulton’s cover of “Baby Got Back” is a riot.

Also, Nevermore covered Simon and Garfunkel’s “The Sound Of Silence”

  15. I’ve heard the “Losing My Religion” before, it’s REALLY good.

  16. What about the Mindless Self Indulgence cover of Tom Sawyer

also try house of the rising sun, covered by muse

    amazing =)

  19. Nice, I liked the Ben Folds remake the most cause he is hilariou, and being a big Cake fan I had heard that cover before.

  20. I can’t believe that nobody has thought to bring up that cover of Paranoid done by Megadeth, it’s REALLY good!

  21. Another “Enjoy the Silence” cover by the Matthew Good Band:

    No YouTube vid, sorry.

  22. Cover of the Gummi Bears theme song, I do not know who originally wrote it, but it’s covered by Suburban Legends.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TuJwInYA4M0

  23. Clearly not Ben Folds…

  24. Lotus-Zelda Theme song. Couldn’t find a video. You can find it on limewire.

  25. Yeah, a good idea for a list gets a thumbs up, but terrible taste almost flips it. Almost all awful pop-punk covers. What about Adam Ants Smooth Criminal cover, or OAR’s Gin and Juice. How about Johnny Cash covering Nine Inch Nails’ Hurt. Maybe Korn covering Cameo’s Word Up. Where’s A Perfect Circle’s Imagine? Maybe it’s just that there are more covers out there than you can begin to list, but this list includes some terrible picks and terrible musicians.

  26. i found mindless self indulgence sis a cover of Big Poppa….lol
its good if u like msi

  27. since youve been gone - a day to remember
