True Men OF Genius

Due to the success of the Top 9 Strangely Arousing Chick Bands I found it inevitable that I attempt another list of similarly arousing females in rock.  In fact I have to admit that some of your suggestions from the previous article motivated me to strive for perfection and try again.  While the main focus of this article is the sexual suggestiveness of certain female performers, I also made this list to highlight some great music that I don’t think everyone has heard quite yet.  Enjoy.

1. Artist Name: Meg and Dia

Artist Info: Siblings, Meg and Dia started their own band in 2004.  Finding relatively quick success in the indie rock circuit, Meg and Dia landed a spot on the Warped Tour, which is where I first heard and saw them.

Strangely Arousing: Like most women that fall into the strangely arousing category, Meg and Dia have a somewhat innocent yet dirty look to them.  I find their music similar to flyleaf, who were on the first iteration of this list.  They even look like the Flyleaf girl, except in a less suicidal way. Oh, did I forget to mention that they are sisters.

2. Artist Name: Marie Digby

Artist Info: Marie, daughter of an American-Irish father and a Japanese mother started her career in early 2005 with Universal Media Group.  In 2006 she even had one of her songs picked up by a Disney compilation, but she didn’t become a hit until she started posting videos on youtube of her covering popular songs.  The most famous of these being her cover of Rihanna - Umbrella.

Strangely Arousing: So, I know what you are thinking.  She’s definitely a looker, which is a ding for arousing, but what about the strange part?  Well, simply put it is voyeurism.  Posting all those clips of herself on youtube to launch her success shows us that she likes to be taped.  A couple drinks in her and we will have the best redtube clip since Kim Kardashian.

3. Artist Name: Basia Bulat

Artist Info: Born in 1984, Canadian based Singer Songwriter Basia released her first EP in 2005.  While she is still not mainstream, she is making her way through the college radio stations of the US and Canada.

Strangely Arousing: I was first drawn to Basia when I recognized the physical similarities that she shares with Michelle Williams.  Sadly enough, I did watch Dawsons Creek some time ago.  Ever since I have always dreamed of a ménage à trois with Katie Holmes and Michelle Williams.  Since Michelle is big time now, I have to hope that Basia can handle that part of the equation.  In addition, her unique sound and knack for peculiar musical instruments lends into the whole band geek thing, and who honestly isn’t at least a little turned on by that.

4. Artist Name: Greta Salpeter of The Hush Sound

Artist Info: Greta, along with Bob Morris started a band in 2004 called The Hush.  The quickly found that they needed more than a pianist and a guitar player to become successful.  Recruiting two more members, The Hush Sound released their first album without a label.  Despite not having a label, they were able to sell over 300 CD’s within two days.  Catching a lucky break, a member of the popular band Fall Out Boy heard The Hush Sound and was able to get them on a major label.  They found their way to my headphones on one of the best compilation CD’s out there, Take Action Volume 6.

Strangely Arousing: Ok, you guys might think I am a little weird for this one, but when you watch the video I am confident you will at least see where I am coming from.  She has this Eve look to her. Eve, like straight from the book, apple eating, rib stealing chick.  That whole forbidden fruit thing is just a metaphor for virginity.  I know I am not the only one who feels this way. I mean come on, she placed second in PETA2’s World’s Sexiest vegetarian 2008 competition.

5. Artist Name: Lali Puna

Artist Info: Based out of Berlin, Lali and her band started playing together in 1998.  While their success in the US has been limited, I hope it’s a different story in Germany.  Lali Puna and Ms. John Soda (also out of Germany), share a similar style of music and have both been dominating my playlist for the last couple of months.

Strangely Arousing: What it comes down to here is she’s kinda scary.  She has that crazy soft spoken serial killer thing going for her.  Some may wonder why that may be arousing. My only response to that is the dangerous aspect, plays on the natural instinct for adventure that most men share.

6. Artist Name: Tegan and Sara

Artist Info: Identical twins, Tegan and Sara created their band in 1997.  Signed to Neil Youngs Vapor Records, Tegan and Sara have toured with some of the industries biggest names, Death Cab for Cutie, Ben Folds, and The Killers, to name a few.

Strangely Arousing: Tegan and Sara are the second set of siblings to make this list.  While they might not be as attractive looking as Meg and Dia, they do make up for it with one key factor.  Lesbians … That’s right, identical twins that are lesbians.  Frankly, it just doesn’t get any better than that.

7. Artist Name: Kate Nash

Artist Info: Born in 1987, Kate didn’t start her career in music until 2007.  Within a year she was #2 on the charts in the UK.

Strangely Arousing: Like Basia, Kate looks like a couple of celebrities that I had a thing for back in the day.  First of which is Pipi Longstocking, It’s probably just the red hair thing there.  The second is Robyn Lively who was the protagonist of the popular 80’s movie, Teen Witch.  Her unique sound and look set her apart from the norm.  Top That!

8. Artist Name: Anette Olzon of Nightwish

Artist Info: In a bit of Controversy, Anette took the lead vocalist role for the Finnish rock band Nightwish in 2007.  While Nightwish was successful before, Anettes arrival boosted the band even more.

Strangely Arousing: Most of the appeal for Anette comes from her music.  Her apocalyptic fantasy opera rock ballads incite the medieval side of me.  With her BSDM look, I can easily see her in a dungeon fantasy.  As Devo always said, “Whip it Good”.

9. Artist Name: The Donnas

Artist Info: Starting in 1993, the all female band The Donnas gained a cult like following.  Though, it wasn’t until their hit song “Take it Off” in 2003 that they became a mainstream hit.

Strangely Arousing: To be honest it’s hard to put any chick band list together and not include The Donnas.  In fact, the only reason I left them off the first list was I thought they were to mainstream.  Besides the blond drummer, I don’t find the rest of the girls to be overly hot.  But this list is not about who is hot.  It’s all about strangely arousing.  The Donnas are a group of girls who like to have fun.  And if you are the right roadie you might get to be that fun.  They are open about their sexuality and often flaunt it.  Plus, did you see them in their teacher costumes on the Take it Off video, amazing.
